A few years ago the world was suddenly astounded by hearing of an experiment of a most novel and daring nature, altogether unprecedented in the annals of science. The BALTIMORE GUN CLUB, a society of artillerymen started in America during the great Civil War, had conceived the idea of nothing less than establishing direct communication with the Moon by means of a projectile! President Barbican, the originator of the enterprise, was strongly encouraged in its feasibility by the astronomers of Cambridge Observatory, and took upon himself to provide all the means necessary to secure its success. Having realized by means of a public subscription the sum of nearly five and a half millions of dollars, he immediately set himself to work at the necessary gigantic labors.
All Around the Moon Illustrated eBook Jules Verne
I felt as if I was reading about the Three Stooges in Space. These clueless adventurers didn't seem to be even aware of much of the science of the day as they shoot out of a cannon towards the moon. I found it quite comical and farcical. As Verne seems to do with much of his writing (Around the World in Eighty Days, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), he uses the setting to espouse all of his knowledge on the topic at hand, whether it be flora and fauna, or geography, or as in this case, outer space.
The final chapters were a cynical portrayal of people's egotism and obstinacy.
Although I enjoyed the book, I would not rate it as good as his others, especially in terms of "believability". Much of it was too far-fetched, even for the limited knowledge of the nineteenth century.

All Around the Moon Illustrated eBook Jules Verne Reviews
I love Jules Verne and this book is no different. It is the second half to To the Moon and Back and I expect great things.
Not so good .
loved it
I grew up on Jules Verne books. They have stimulated my imagination and interest in science when I was a young teenager. I wish kids these days would read more than they do.
should never pay authors by the word, very wordy
They follow the men shot out of the huge gun towards the moon. This is science fiction written years ago, so there are serious errors that made me exclaim how impossible it would be. Verne had an intuition for underwater adventure that turned out remarkably accurate. This will amuse with the outlandish scenarios
I had read this as part of the combined story with the trip to the moon and the return. It was great. Verne predicted and wrote about many things although he was not making predictions, just writing good sci-fi.
